Richard the Lionheart

Richard I or better known as Richard the Lionheart, the top and most well known figure in the Crusader Army and the King of England was born in Oxford, England on September 8, 1157. He was the third legiment son of King Henry II and favorite son of Eleanor of Aquitaine. His adult appearances were some what unusual for the time, he had red-blond hair, blue eyes and was an incredible 6'4".

During his early years, after his parents seperated (His mother was French and his father was English) he lived with his mother in the region of Aquitaine, France. He along with one fo his brothers, Geoffrey, Duke of Brittany, they learned how to defend their property when they were adolescents. Richard was educated really well for his age, able to recite and compose poetry in French and Occitan. He was extremely good at military tactics and training, which was not uncommon for most princes at that time.

When Richard's older brother, Henry the Young King was to be the new king of England, Richard and his brothers planned to overthrow Henry II and make Henry the Young King the only king of England. A rebellion soon followed which failed and Richard and his siblings, that survived, had to swear oath again to their father.

Soon after, many political problems arose which then led to Richard becoming King, after the other eligible heirs were killed. As soon as he rose to power, he began to spend much of the nation's money on the Crusade, which had now reached France. After agreeeing with King Philip II of France and taking the Cross, the duo set off to take Sicily and restablish the government there.

During the Crusade, Richard fought many battles, one of them was the Siege of Acre, where he defeated the infamous Saladin, the leader of the Muslim army. Richard attempted to take Jerusalem, but failed twice until the crusader army was given to the command of another.He also found a wife, Berengaria, first born daughter of the King of Cyprus, also an important island during the Crusade.

After the crusade, Richard returned home and ruled England, however, he had many debts to pay from the war and was accused of ordering the death of his first cousin, Conard. With that, he was arrested and eventually released as soon he had the money to bail himself out from Germany. Afterward, Richard's friend, Philip II turned against him. Richard I died after getting hit with a crossbow bolt in the shoulder, after attacking a French castle. Gangrene set in and he passed away on April 6, 1199.
